JIM FERRIER claimed the first of his four NSW Open Close Championships at The Lakes in October, 1933.
At only 18 years old, and to the delight of the crowds, Ferrier did the almost unthinkable by breaking the course record twice on an exciting final day, swooping from five shots back.
After opening with consecutive rounds of 77, the brilliant Manly youngster followed up his magnificent third round of 69 with a slashing afternoon final round of 68, helping him to victory over the defending champion, VS Richardson.
The Sydney Sun on the day reported Ferrier’s exploits, especially his morning round, as “superb and practically faultless.”
It wasn’t all over though, and the excitement came thick and fast over the final 18 holes.
Challengers included the inaugural champion, Charlie Gray, who carded a final round 70, while (William) Bill Bolger went out in four-under 32 to heap the pressure early. Sadly bogeys on the back nine saw him come unstuck, and his final round two-under 70 not enough.
Ferrier held his nerve to claim victory despite a couple of loose shots coming home with enough of a buffer in the end to cruise to a four-shot win.
The young Championship was growing in popularity, and Ferrier’s exploits captivated the crowd who had made the trek out to the newly crafted Lakes layout at Kingsford.
