John Lyras on the hunt for the Camden Cup

John Lyras is keen to claim a place in this year’s NSW Open at the Camden Cup, one of this month’s NSW Open Regional Qualifying events.

The St. Michael's GC Representative was one of six amateurs who made last year’s NSW Open field via Regional Qualifying (RQ) after posting an impressive two-round score of 4-under par in the Camden RQ on the historic Studley Park layout.

After a disappointing exit from last year’s Championship, the 20-year-old is keen for another chance to test his game against some of Australia’s finest golfers at the Open’s new home, Twin Creeks Golf and Country Club.

“I can’t wait. I would love to get another crack at the NSW Open after what happened last year.”

“Playing in the NSW Open (last year) helped turn my career track in a different direction; it’s pushed me on to the next level; it’s given me more belief.”

“Twin Creeks is another track I love. It’s an incentive for me too,” Lyras said.

Despite a slow start to the year the Maroubra local feels his game is peaking at the right time.

“I made the final of the Vic Amateur late last year, which was a good experience beating some of the top guys down there,” he said.

“I had a solid week at Royal Adelaide in the SA Classic in tough conditions. It motivated me, and I’ve got a bit of confidence back,” he smiled.

Lyras has fond memories of the Camden layout and is looking forward to returning to the scene of last year’s triumph. He expects the competition to be fierce with the RQ now being played in conjunction with the Camden Cup.

“It's a beautiful layout; it suits my eye. They can get the greens slick and rolling beautifully. If you have a good putting week, you’ll be up there.”

“It’s more of a shootout over one round, so that means you’ve got to leave nothing on the table.”

“You’ve got to have your game on that day,” he added.
